CMABA Mission
This is the official Central Mississippi Association for Behavior
Analysis (CMABA). CMABA exists to support experimental and applied
behavior analysis in Mississippi, in academic as well as community settings,
and serves to disseminate accurate information about behavior analysis to
scientists, researchers, practitioners, and consumers of behavior analysis
in its many forms. CMABA will serve as a peer review organization in an
attempt to educate journalists, educators, health care providers, and
legislators about behavior analysis as a science of behavior and to self
moderate the application of behavior analytic services in Mississippi.
The experimental analysis of behavior was founded by B. F.
Skinner, and based on his philosophy of radical behaviorism. It is the
inductive, data-driven examination of functional relations, as opposed to
the kinds of cognitive (circular and reification) learning theory that has
grown out of traditional psychology. Experimental analysis of behavior
is characterized by empirical observation of measurable behavior which could
be predicted and controlled.
Applied behavior analysis focuses on objectively defined, observable
behaviors of social significance; it seeks to improve the behavior under
study while demonstrating a reliable relationship between the procedures
employed and the behavioral improvement; and it uses the methods of
science-description, quantification, and analysis.
